Teen Arrested, Suspended For Shooting Dinosaur in Writing Assignment

It’s that time of year again – when children go back to school and new “zero-tolerance” policy stories abound. Many students returned to their institutions of learning just this week, but Summerville High School in Summerville, South Carolina has wasted little time in getting down to business. 16-year-old Alex stone has not only been suspended, but arrested – for writing a story in which he shot a dinosaur. He is being charged with disorderly conduct.

On the first day of class, Stone and his classmates were asked to write a short story about themselves and include with it a fictional Facebook status. In his story and statuses, Stone wrote that he shot a neighbor’s pet dinosaur with a gun he had bought “to take care of business.” The teacher allegedly saw the words “gun” and “take care of business” and called school officials. Officials then notified the police.

Police arrived on the scene Tuesday and searched both the boy’s bookbag and locker. Obviously, no gun was found. Obviously the teen got upset. His “irate” nature at the search was the official reason for his arrest. He was handcuffed and taken into custody.

According to the boy’s mother, he was suspended for the rest of the week. She doesn’t understand the school or the police’s reaction, stating, “I could understand if they made him re-write it because he did have ‘gun’ in it. But a pet dinosaur? I mean first of all, we don’t have dinosaurs anymore. Second of all, he’s not even old enough to buy a gun.”

However, police are focusing on the phrase “take care of business,” interpreting it as a threat. Original reports of the incident stated that Stone actually did bring a gun to school, and was expelled. The school resource officer called the police, asking for the boy to be arrested. However, many of those reports have now been updated and police have confirmed that Stone was not found to be in possession of a gun.
